These books are for anyone
interested in the history and development of the Boys' Brigade or
who have an interest in the social history at the turn of the 20th
century.
They takes a nostalgic view
of the "Brigades" during the early days at the end of
the 19th century and show many old rare picture postcards, photographs and records the history, organisation and uniforms of
The Boys' Brigade, Church Lads' Brigade, Catholic Boys' Brigade,
Boys' Life Brigade and many more similar organisations.
These books are well
researched by Robin Bolton an ex-member who came up through the
ranks of the 57th Birmingham (Pheasey) Company to become a
Lieutenant. This Company in the 1970's was one of Britain's
largest, most successful and progressive BB Companies; providing
Robin with a unique opportunity to participate in the leadership
of a whole range of Brigade activities. Robin is probably one of
if not the leading Brigade Historian in the world today and most
of the picture postcards and other items that illustrate these
books come
from his own collection.

The "Golden-Age"
of the Picture Postcard corresponds almost exactly with the start
of the great re-discovery and re-definition of Boyhood and
Adolescence that we now take for granted. Consequently, there is a
profusion of pictures of young people engaged in specifically
"youth" activities and the books focus upon the
"Brigade Movement" which was an important influence on
many thousands of Boys.
The Boys' Brigade launched
the "Brigade Movement"' in Britain, and there were a
number of outwardly similar clones which grew up before the turn
of the century. Activities, aims and leadership varied
considerably; perhaps most markedly in their attitude to
increasing militarism as the country drifted inevitably towards
the Great War. Offshoots and short-lived localised variants were
very common. Notably the growth of "Scouting"' as an
activity found its roots in the Brigades, where it continued to
grow even after "B.P.'s Scouts" founded their own
Patrols after 1907.
Boys of the
Brigade gives us unique photographic evidence of some of the early
Brigades and their history.
